The
Meghalaya State Electricity Board, or MeSEB as it is
known, came into being on
the
21st January, 1975
, consequent upon the bifurcation of the erstwhile Assam
State Electricity Board. The bifurcation was an offshoot
of the emergence of Meghalaya as a State in 1972.
The
MeSEB was constituted under Section (5) of the
Electricity (Supply) Act, 1948 by the Government of
Meghalaya vide notification No. PE304/74 dated 21.12.74.
With
the bifurcation, the MeSEB inherited 4 power stations,
the connecting transmission and distribution lines
including the distribution sub-stations. Out of the 4
power stations, the Umiam Stage-III power station was
then under construction. The total installed capacity at
the time of bifurcation in 1975 was 66.506 MW, the
details of which are furnished below:

total installed capacity has since gone up to 185.20 MW
with the addition of the 60 MW Umiam-Umtru Stage-III
Power Station in 1979 and the 60MW Umiam-Umtru Stage-IV
Power Station in 1992.
